Repair first, replace only when it makes sense
Most openers made in the last twenty years are worth repairing. Logic boards, travel modules, gear and sprocket kits, capacitors, limit switches and safety sensors are all available and all cost a fraction of a new unit. We carry the common boards for LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie on the van.
When replacement is the honest answer
If the unit predates 1993 it has no photo-eye safety system, which has been federally required since then, and no amount of repair fixes that. If the motor housing is cracked or the transformer has burned, the economics stop working. And if you specifically want quiet operation over a bedroom, a belt drive is a genuine upgrade a repair cannot deliver.
