How cables fail
The lift cable runs from the bottom bracket, up the side of the door and wraps around a drum at the top. Wear concentrates at the drum wrap and at the bottom bracket, where salt and water sit. Strands break one at a time until the remaining wire cannot carry the load, then it goes all at once. You usually get weeks of visible fraying as warning.
Why a snapped cable is not just a cable job
When one cable goes, that side of the door drops and the door twists in the track. The drum on the failed side unwinds and often loses its set screw position. The opposite cable now carries everything and gets overloaded. A proper repair replaces both cables, re-seats and re-times both drums, checks the bearings and re-squares the door. Replacing one cable and leaving is how you get called back in a month.
